n English the comma is used for many reasons. In most cases, if you will remember that commas separate thoughts, phrases, or series of things listed side by side. They can also be used to separate city from state, month from year. A dash is used as a type of 'super comma' and is used sparingly to show a break in thought or a shift in tone. Hyphens are used in a series of elements that are almost the same, or when you reach the end of a page line and must split the word. You can use it it create compound words, write numbers, or add prefixes to words.
