Tilly is the main character. She is a troubled, young woman with a drinking problem. She also smokes pot. Tilly is the first of her family to go to college, where she earns a nursing degree. She struggles with alcoholism, and over time, she conquers her troubles.

Grandmother was Tilly's anchor and mentor. She taught her the traditions of their people.

Marie, Tilly's sister, was well adjusted and popular.

Tilly's mother is a Cree. She doesn't know her family, as she was removed from their care as a child.
