There are many metaphors in this novel. In chapter one she is concerned about stepping out on the right foot (the belief being that stepping out on the left foot brought bad luck). When they come for them she realizes that there would not be any more right footed moments or any of them. Additionally, she talks about 'ending the nightmare' meaning the horrible circumstances they find themselves in.
