Hana takes a great risk in leaving her village but the life she is living is known to her, and she does not want it. The trip to America and the life she expects to live serves as a beacon, drawing her to it like a magnet. Even though it does not turn out the way that she has envisioned it, her future in America has more promise than in Japan. During the '70's Japan did not have many freedoms.
