There are a number of themes that you can consider. Hopelessness for a woman in Senegal is a major theme. The novel doesn't beat around the bush when it comes to its horrific elements. After wallowing in depression and loneliness, Mireille goes insane after finding out her husband has a second wife and kills her own child and attempts to kill Ousmane. Her escape from Senegal is one of deportation when sanity does not return to her. The outlandish and rampant misogyny of polygamists is mentally disturbing to Mireille, and her abandonment of hope is not unique. Many women in Senegal are left with the same fate as Mireille.
