In The Sorcerer King, when the unicorns (assisted by Bryn) learn of their quest and why they need help, the unicorns agree to act as steeds for Edric, Tania, and Cordelia. These are the wild unicorns that are considered wild, untamable, and dangerous. And, to many, they are. They would have killed the travelers if it hadn't been for the intervention by Bryn, a man who lives with the unicorns. Like Cordelia, he is able to talk with the animals.
