New York City is the most populous city in the United States, as well as the novel's main setting. At the time of the novel, New York City is Zuckerman’s place of residence. In the narrative, Zuckerman moves about New York City to see his agent, to see an investment specialist, and simply to observe human life as fodder for future fiction. In a New York City deli, Zuckerman meets Alvin Pepler by chance. The next day, Zuckerman runs into Pepler again right outside Zuckerman’s apartment building. Towards the end of the novel, Zuckerman temporarily leaves New York City to visit his parents in Miami and then to visit his original hometown of Newark.
