Tangelos are a symbol of the beginning and end of the novel, and how Jamie and Maya’s relationship has evolved. A tangelo is a hybrid of a tangerine and orange. The novel begins with Jamie causing a tangelo explosion in the important setting of Target, right after he sees Maya. He is picking up tangelos for campaign office snacks. This moment symbolizes his clumsiness but also the cute meet of how Maya and Jamie see each other. It also symbolizes how Jamie internalizes his clumsiness and thinks people judge him for it more than they do. At the end of the novel, back in Target, Maya runs to meet Jamie in the patio section and when Kevin finds them trying to find somewhere to makeout, he makes a joke about cleaning up a tangelo section. This bright orange color of the fruit and explosion represents the lighting of the fire of passion between Maya and Jamie - both for each other, and the campaign.
