How does Malcolm get caught up in criminal activities after getting a job in Harlem in the book, X: A Novel?

Just like in Roxbury, Malcolm is impressed with Harlem's jazz music scene and its various hipsters and hustlers, and he quickly gets caught up in criminal activity. He starts by building a relationship with a pimp named Sammy, before moving on to selling drugs and running the numbers game for West Indian Archie. Malcolm soon starts sampling his own drug products and is run out of town by Archie, who believes Malcolm is trying to scam him for money. Upon first sight, though, Harlem is full of promise for Malcolm, "Music. Art. Jazz. A kind of celebration of blackness I have never seen or experienced," (204) he rhapsodizes.
