X: A Novel

At the end of chapter 18 Malcolm meets some men who are talking about Negro improvement, and he also meets Archie West Indian Archie. Predict what you think will happen next.

The samaller mans in the middle of a long monolgue about Negro improvement. It is nothing I have not heard before, between papas preaching and moms lessons not to mention Ella talking it all back to me day in and day out Waste of time now. All of it. Negroes do not need improvement. real negroes do not sit around and talk about how things should be and what they should have. Real negroes -real - men- go out and get some of their own.

In Chapter 18, Malcolm moves to Harlem and begins spending time at a bar called Small's Paradise. Here he meets a man called “Sammy the Pimp” (245). Sammy calls Malcolm “Detroit Red” (251) because he is from Michigan, and introduces him to West Indian Archie, the man in charge of the numbers game in Harlem. Malcolm overhears some men in the bar talking about Marcus Garvey. They attempt to engage him in conversation, but he rebuffs them. I think the criminal element will enter into Malcolm's life.
