What causes the conflicts in the Earnshaw household that Mrs. Dean describes in Chapter 5?

Mr. Earnshaw becomes ill, and any attacks on his favorite, Heathcliff, make him furious. Hindley is sent away to college in the hopes his behavior will improve, but there is no peace in the house, as Catherine and Joseph often quarrel.
