Hindley returns home for the funeral and brings his wife, Frances, whom no one knows anything about. The servants, who are used to being treated like members of the family, are now relegated to the kitchen, Nelly included. Hindley rules with an iron fist, sending Heathcliff to work in the fields, and stopping his education.
