Who is Skeleton Woman from Women Who Run with the Wolves and what is their importance?

Skeleton Woman is all about the Life/Death/Life cycle. She is terrifying and deeply sad. This is quite understandable when the readers learn that in some versions of the story, she was literally killed by her own father, but in other cases maimed by him. The author tells at least one tale about her near the center of the book.
