After hearing Red’s story, the two children use each other’s names and acknowledge the experience they have shared. The next morning, they walk to school together side by side even as their parents look on in disapproval. While Stephen’s parents try to teach their son to judge Samar for being different, Stephen remains curious and open-minded. He shows his courage when he works hard to extend his tolerance to the larger community, leading the neighborhood to use Wishing Day to properly welcome Samar and her family for the first time, months after their arrival.
