Who is Elayne Trakand from Winter's Heart and what is their importance?

Elayne Trakand is the heir to the throne of Andor, and she rules her kingdom as if she is already crowned. She bonds with Rand and carries his child. Due to this, she defends her kingdom against attack. However, the story does not explain if an attack ever comes, possibly saving this part for a subsequent novel.
