The girls face the after effects of the plague that attacked their island. They are short on food, they suffer from isolation, and they have been placed under quaratine. The girls struggle to learn new skills, they must take on adult responsibilites, and they must face the threat of dangerous and violent wildlife, which also has been adversely affected by the plague.

Hetty faces the conflict of following the rules or leaving on her own to find her best Friend, Byatt.

Teddy Martin is struggling to find a cure when Byatt infects him, leaving him with the choice of whether he wants to live ot die. He chooses suicide.
