.
.
When he first starts staying with Uncle T, Gabriel is discomfited by the neighborhood and its inhabitants. The block seems defined by danger and violence. With time, he grows accustomed to the place, using it throughout the novel as a place of refuge. Whenever he is in hiding, needs an escape from his parents, or a place to smoke, he calls Uncle T, who always welcomes him back.
