Why does Bernie adopt Aramis and Li'l Spooker in the novel, Whittington?

Aramis and Li'l Spooker are the horses adopted by Bernie after they become too old to race and are essentially abandoned. Both horses become ill, with different ailments, over the course of the narrative, but both recover fully with the help of Bernie, the other animals, and the veterinarian.
