Franka's perspective is that of a young adult. At 26-years-old, Franka has a great deal of life experience already and has undergone a shift in morality and ideology by the time the novel begins. Through flashbacks, the author allows the reader to see how Franka evolved from an impressionable young girl to a determined young adult who knows what she is willing to risk. Franka spends the majority of the novel alone with John in the Black Forest, only occasionally venturing into the nearby town of Freiburg.
