Why is Harvey irritated by the ticking of the clock in the short story, White Noise (The New Yorker)?

Harvey becomes irritated by the clock because it reminds him that time is passing, and that he will soon have to face his trial. Desperately wanting to live in a world untouched by time or consequence, Harvey demands that Gabe remove the clock batteries.
