The author uses symbolism to communicate concepts. Besides the magical play of light and dark, which relates to women's self-development, Yolen employs the color green. The Grenna are surrounded by the color and are also called Greenfolk, a name which emphasizes the growth and vigor of the egalitarian concept they present. Jenna's journey with the Grenna to the Green World blends fantasy with the sciencefiction device of time travel.
