Parker Fiske, Eleanor's cousin and an employee at the State Department, is forced to resign after he is outed as a homosexual. He attempts to blackmail Hick, telling her that he will go public with information about her relationship with Eleanor if she does not get the president to support him during the scandal. Hick is not intimidated by his threats, but she asks the president and Eleanor to support him anyway because she is sensitive to his plight. Fiske loses his job despite backing from the Roosevelts because J. Edgar Hoover dislikes him.
