The book shows how family can transcend biological ties. Sara repeatedly describes how Vivienne becomes like a mother to her. Even when Sara wakes up from dreaming about her mom, Vivienne hugs her, and the embrace reminds Sara of her own mother's arms. Vivienne becomes so much like a mother to Sara that Sara visits Jean-Paul and Vivienne every summer for the rest of their lives, and they even walk Sara down the aisle with her father when she later gets married. This demonstrates how family can even overcome biological ties and include people whom others are not biologically connected with--yet tied to with the bonds of love and unforgettable care.
