How did Sara's father react to the Nazi occupation of France in the novel, White Bird: A Wonder Story?

Sara's father, a doctor, wanted his family to flee France for somewhere safer. He told Sara that the light in people is what is important.... that their light is something that no one can extinguish. At one point, Sara and her father were separated, but they were eventually reunited.
