The shack in the woods is the place where Ralph and Miriam's lives converge. It represents a neutral ground, where both of them ended up at turning points in their lives. Ralph ends up there to contemplate his wife's behavior, and ultimately their marriage. He has to address his own feelings as well, a challenge that is ironically difficult for him as a psychotherapist. Miriam ends up there as one of her first attempts at leaving her house in three years.
