What is Binder

The binder that Sam has fashioned into a sort of chest plate represents his desire to maintain privacy during his process of discovering his gender identity. In the closing scene of the novel, when Sam and Miel make love again, Sam meaningfully takes the binder off, indicating that he has reached a new level of comfort and confidence with regard to his body and identity.
