Unplanned pregnancy

The Bonner parents' reaction to Chloe's unplanned pregnancy represents the town's pathological desire to maintain positive outward appearances. At the end of the novel, Miel herself realizes that she had only been considering the social implications of Chloe's pregnancy, while completely ignoring the real-life child that had resulted from it.
