How does the author use symbolism in the novel, When I’m Gone?

Luke’s childhood home symbolizes abuse and his painful childhood. Luke notes that even with the new paint and renovations, it cannot hide the evil that occurred there. He still sees the blood of his mother and dead sister when he returns there.
