The first patient Paul lost was an 82-year-old woman. She was the healthiest person on the general surgery service, and she had been admitted for constipation from a mild bowel obstruction. A minor operation was done to sort things out, and she seemed to be doing fine. She began to crash after midnight, and nothing Paul did for her helped. She was transferred to the ICU. She died the next evening.
