Stephen Spring (Whatever Happened to Janie) is 17 years old and resents what his sister's disappearance did to the family and their lives. As one of the older children, he is more aware of the changes and the new restrictions surrounding the disappearance. He finally gives voice to his feelings and his parents believe that it is time to formally say 'good bye' to Janie. They hold a type of ceremony where they all say good bye. Stephen, however, still hates her silently.
