Auschwitz-Berkenau, the second concentration camp that Gerta and her father are transferred to in Poland, is described as a machine of death and Jewish prisoners are put to their death in gas chambers. The air in the camp is thick with smoke from the chimney,s and the surviving prisoners have to breathe in the ashes of the dead.
