Carl Braden was a civil rights activist and social justice advocate that was imprisoned for sedition in the 1950s both for protesting strip mining in Kentucky and for helping an African-American couple purchase a home in a largely white community. Due to his socially progressive work, he was accused of being a Communist that had plans to overthrow the government.
