Having left the kibbutz, Marc has made his home in LA, which represents his version of the American dream. He has his own business and a typical American home and family. The fragility of his dream and life in LA is evident once he is arrested and treated unfairly by the police. The hollowness of Marc's American dream is also clear in the false image he has erected of his family and marriage. Carolyn's history as a call girl upends the narrative, as does their neighbor's recognition that the Solomons are outsiders, a fact that she does not fail to impart on Carolyn, even though California is supposed to be a bastion of liberal ideology that is welcoming to outsiders.
