Why did Didier move away from Port-au-Prince in the novel, What Storm, What Thunder?

Boston, Massachusetts is the American city where Didier is living at the time of the earthquake. Roughly a year before the disaster, Didier moved here for a fresh start. He was desperate to escape Port-au-Prince and determined to create a life for himself as a musician.
