Whose presence haunts Sara throughout the novel, What Storm, What Thunder?

When the earthquake strikes, Sara's son, Jonas, is injured. His leg is amputated afterwards, and eventually gets infected. He does not survive. His ghostly presence haunts his mother throughout the novel.
