The author uses Evangeline's unborn baby to represent the promise of life and reconciliation. For Evangeline, her baby represents hope for a better future. She is willing to put aside the poison of "annoyances and resentments, bitterness and rage" because she realizes that "the baby needed her heart" (277). Similarly, the baby may represent hope for both Lorrie and Isaac, given that it is possible that the child could be a grandchild. Regardless of the baby's lineage, the promise of life helps soften the blow of death and represents the possibility of rebirth in all circumstances.
