Tompkins uses metaphors to impart some of the philosophical tropes regarding the interconnectedness of all life forces as well as the understanding of that which separates humans from wild animals. In addition to using the house and the ocean as metaphors, she uses Rufus as the delineation between wilderness and humanity. Although Rufus has some innate animalistic tendencies, such as hunting, he also possesses a deep love for his people and this domestic side makes him capable of great love. It also helps him keep his predatory urges in check.
