Benjamin’s discussion of Greek time exemplifies the novel’s relationship with time. He discusses how one notion of time the Greeks had focused on the subjective nature of time. The novel progresses through frequent flashbacks ranging from Elizabeth and Jack’s courting days all the way back to Elizabeth’s distant ancestors. This shows how time is connected and that what happens at one moment in time influences what happens in the future. Time is subjective in the novel to the degree to which people are constantly influenced by their past.
