Well-Read Black Girl features twenty-one different voices in twenty-one different essays, however each is told from the first-person perspective and acknowledges the entire identity of the author in question. The pronouns “I,” “me,” etc. all serve to signal the author’s personality, while explicit reference is also made to the fact that these essays are being told to a reader. Thus, the reader’s presence is both recognized and catered to, as authors seek to make themselves understood or, in certain cases, as they seek to push the boundaries of first-person narrative and include the reader in their musings.
