Lou is Emerald's husband and is one hundred and twelve years old. He lives with his wife and twelve other couples, including his parents and his son, in his grandfather's one-bedroom apartment. Lou looks on the bright side of things, especially when Em is feeling down. He believes people should be able to choose when to give up anti-gerasone, and he takes no intentional action to unseat Gramps from his position of authority. Lou does indulge with Em in imagining what it was like in the past, with restaurants and cars and countryside.
