How does the author use symbolism in the book, Weathering: A Novel?

The author uses the river as a symbol of life and death. The river is shown to be a powerful force that is attributed with human sounds, like muttering, and roaring. It offers companionship to Pearl, but also takes her life. As the river takes her to her death, she remembers her life.
