As Lizzie becomes familiar with drug abuse and addiction through her relationship with Henry, in her eyes, drugs are symbols of destruction. As Henry relapses once again, Lizzie watches him destroy his marriage, his relationship with his child, and his overall happiness. Furthermore, Henry’s struggles with addiction puts a strain on his relationship with Lizzie, as he becomes totally dependent on her. Because of this, Lizzie learns to not become involved with drugs herself, as she does not want to lose her autonomy in the same way that Henry has.
