.
.
Though it is an abstract setting, the e-mails that Lizzie answers for Sylvia take up a major space in both the narrative and Lizzie’s life. Though the job is at first simply a means of making extra money, Lizzie quickly becomes invested in job, and even finds herself worrying for the wellbeing of Sylvia’s fanbase. When Lizzie becomes overwhelmed by her concern for things like Henry’s mental health, it is the e-mails that she turns to as a distraction. Thus, the e-mails come to represent a place of retreat and rest for Lizzie, even as the topic of the questions often cause her unease. Lizzie chooses to continue answering the e-mails even after Sylvia decides to quit the podcast altogether. So, while Lizzie’s primary job is at the library, it is through this secondary job that she finds real purpose. The e-mails ultimately becomes a space where Lizzie can feel she is truly helping others.
