.
.
The novel’s time frame spans Nigel’s age from eleven to thirteen. Part Four picks up when Nigel is a young man. Out of all the characters, including the narrator, Nigel undergoes the largest transformation. He begins as a shy, anxiety-ridden young boy, eager to please his parents. By the end, he has become a self-assured individual, who has forged a path to happiness in spite of what his father or broader society prescribed for him. In this way, he embodies inner strength and moral fortitude, the exact opposite of his father.
