Names are symbolic of identity in the novel. Before Justin dies, he tells Kevin his name in the hopes that his legacy lives on. As a child, Riley changes her name as a way of securing her future in the media industry. Changing her name enables her to control the way she is perceived and remembered. When Jen suffers, she repeats Chase’s name to remind herself of her identity as a mother.
