why were Mary and her dad fighting in chapter 9

Mary and her dad fight all the time, and he nags her to do more chores. No one has been able to find any work - her Dad, Mom or Stan. Her Dad yells at her for being ungrateful and Mary wonders how can she be grateful for their situation. She walks out again, and finds Aiko throwing a baseball against the side of the rec center.
