Why did Conrad choose to transfer out of Brown and attend college in California in the novel, We’ll Always Have Summer?

Initially, Conrad goes to college at Brown. However, after the fallout of the previous novel in which Jeremiah and Belly got together and Conrad pretended like he did not care because he felt incapable of loving Belly properly after losing his mother and witnessing his father cheat on her, Conrad transferred to a school in California where he could keep himself away from Belly and the temptation to restore his relationship with her and ruin her relationship with Jeremiah.
