The novel’s prose is written in a generally accessible and conversational manner, thereby mirroring the ways in which the characters attempt to navigate the practical and emotional problems that they face on a daily basis. For example, when Sam is exercising, she partially struggles with the potential futility of exercise in general: “But, she wondered, better performance of what? Strength for what? Enhanced lifespan to do what?” (121). This tone of bewilderment with the modern world suffuses the novel’s various thematic explorations, as the characters struggle to make sense of modernity and their place in it.
