The more protective Sam became, the more desperate Ally became to establish her own independence. When Sam decided to leave Matt and move to another neighborhood, Ally resented Sam for what she perceived as abandonment. Over time, Ally secretly begins dating a 29-year-old man named Joe, and when Sam finally discovers Ally's secret, she chooses not to intervene. Ally interprets Sam’s choice as a sign that Sam will no longer be overprotective, and later, following Sam’s stroke, Ally reestablishes contact with her mother.
