What is the symbolism of the bridge in the novel, Way of the Warrior Kid?

The bridge symbolizes another hurdle in Marc's effort to gain skills and confidence over the summer. The bridge spans the river where Marc and Jake swim. People often jump off the bridge into the water. Jake knows Marc needs to make that jump to fully overcome his fear of the water, and it takes a lot of courage for Marc to actually make the jump.
